Wrinkle Relaxers

For long lasting, natural looking results

Since 1973 doctors have used injectable muscle relaxants for muscular and nerve disorders such as squints, chronic eyelid twitch and muscle spasms such as those seen in cerebral palsy. More recently (since 1988) they have been used for cosmetic purposes.

Our Doctors at Laser Skin Care have many years experience in wrinkle relaxer treatment. We only use genuine branded relaxers, and all our stock is carefully managed to ensure your treatment is performed with the highest quality.

How do Wrinkle Relaxers Work?

Wrinkle relaxers are used as an anti-wrinkle treatment. When we laugh or frown our brain sends a signal to our muscles to make expression lines appear on our face. Using this injection treatment, the potent muscle relaxant smooths out the expression lines, lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The way the wrinkle relaxer works is that it blocks the signals from the nerve to the facial muscles to stop them contracting, leaving the skin looking smooth.
At your consultation, our Talent will examine your facial muscles to determine where to administer the anti-wrinkle injections. Several tiny injections will then be precisely injected into the muscles that cause the frown lines.

Cosmetic Uses

Because of their ability to relax muscles, these injectables are useful where overactivity of muscle groups cause unwanted skin lines such as:
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crows feet
  • Bunny or scrunchy lines on the nose
  • Dimpling of the chin
  • Upper lip lines
  • Platysmal or neck bands

It may also be used to prolong the effects of wrinkle fillers which would be “squeezed” out prematurely in areas such as:

  • Lips
  • Marionette lines
  • Chin creases

Wrinkle relaxers are also used for treatment of migraine.

What are the benefits?

Wrinkle Relaxers are Preventative
While their main purpose is to improve or temporarily remove existing lines, anti-wrinkle injections can be used as a preventative measure to help soften expression lines.

Over-active facial muscles continuously fold and crease the skin causing lines and wrinkles to form faster than your skin can repair them. Wrinkle relaxers reduce the activity of these muscles to allow your skin more time to repair.

The goal of treatment is to allow your skin to regenerate. To restore health yet not to freeze your face.

Wrinkle Relaxers can help with shape and symmetry

Wrinkle relaxers can also be used to change resting muscle tone to improve the dynamics of your smile and can be used to lift certain parts of the face and balance asymmetrical features.

Areas that may be treated include: Frown lines, Forehead lines, Crow’s feet, Gummy smile, Smile lift, and Square jaw reduction.

Your face will look more rested

With both age and repetitive muscle movement, lines settle into the face and are visible even at rest. It’s these static, 24/7 lines that can make your face look tired and fatigued. By softening those lines and wrinkles in the skin, your face looks instantly fresher, more youthful, and relaxed. Cue compliments.

Preparation and aftercare

Instructions post wrinkle relaxant procedure:

1. Remain upright (don’t lie down) for 4 hours

2. Don’t touch the area(s) injected, especially don’t massage

3. Use the muscles frequently (ie frown or squint a lot) over the next 4 hours.

Notes
Slight swelling and or bruising is common post injection.

Paralysis of the muscles with disappearance or reduction of the lines should occur between 1 to 2 weeks.

Re-treatment is usually required 3 to 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How are Wrinkle Relaxers used?

Tiny amounts are injected in and around the area. There is a stinging sensation with the procedure, which is very short lived. The procedure itself usually takes less than 10 minutes, and you can go straight back to work afterwards if needed.

Within a few days the effects start to become noticeable, although the peak of action may not occur for 1 to 2 weeks. Over a period of 3 to 4 months the effects gradually wear off and to continue the effect, repeat injections are required. Repeat injections over time may lead to longer intervals between treatments, but it is unlikely that it will ever be permanent.

  • Does it work for everyone?

No. A very small proportion of patients have pre-existing antibodies which renders the substance ineffective. Unfortunately there is no way of identifying this small group of people beforehand.

  • How long do anti-wrinkle cosmetic injectable results last?

Anti-wrinkle injections start to work 2-3 days after the injection and reach their full effect within 7-14 days. The effects can typically last for up to 3-4 months depending on the individual.

  • What are the risks?

    General after effects:

    • Bruising. This is temporary only.
    • Pain or headache. This passes quickly.

    Upper face injections:

    • Ptosis or weakness of the upper eyelid. This causes drooping of the eyelid and occurs in less than 1% of patients. This may last up to four weeks but is minimised by not lying down for 4 hours after treatment, and not massaging the area.
    • Overuse in the forehead can result in ‘heavy brows’ or an excessively frozen look to the forehead.
    • ‘Peaky’ eyebrows – this can occur when the frown area is treated due to compensatory overactivity of the outer forehead muscles.
    • Double vision related to treatment under the eye. This is very uncommon but will usually disappear within two weeks.
    • “Bags” under the eye. May appear more prominent in susceptible persons.

    Other areas:

    • Neck weakness(where injected into platysmal bands)
    • Difficulty with swallowing, whistling and speaking(around mouth)
    • Asymmetrical smile(treatments around mouth)

Wrinkle relaxer injections are not recommended for:

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
    • Patients with Multiple Sclerosis or Myasthenia gravis

  • Can I get anti-wrinkle cosmetic injectable treatments while pregnant?

No. Your safety is our main concern and for this reason, we do not treat patients who are pregnant. We advise against all cosmetic injectable treatments whilst pregnant simply out of precaution and due to the lack of information available on cosmetic injectable treatment effects on the fetus.
