Leg Vein Removal Blog

Spider veins and varicose veins can be treated by our doctors.

Sclerotherapy

Visibly dilated leg veins (ie, spider veins or small varicose veins) may be indicative of underlying venous problem, especially when associated with symptoms (aching, swelling, heaviness). However, dilated veins can occur in the absence of symptoms and are often a source of significant distress to the patient, and are cosmetically unattractive.

The goals of treatment are improved symptoms and appearance. Initial treatment for most patients for leg spider veins and small varicose veins involves injection of them or sclerotherapy which is relatively pain free injection of a sclerosant or irritant solution into the vessel using a very fine needle. It results in improved clearance of treated veins. Superficial spider veins too small for injecting can also be treated with vascular laser and this can be done at the same time as injection of larger veins if there is time available or during a separate appointment.

Recovery after Sclerotherapy involves 1-2 weeks of compression bandages and avoidance of strenuous exercise. Recovery after both Sclerotherapy and laser of leg veins can include transient bruising and altered skin pigmentation. The veins do not disappear immediately but take 6-8 weeks. Multiple sessions are often required.
