What is the Fractional CO2 Laser used to treat?

What is Fractional?
The CO2 Laser treats only a fraction of the skin at a time (15 – 60%). This is in contrast to traditional resurfacing techniques that remove the entire top layer of the skin and are associated with oozing, crusting and a lengthy recovery period.

How does fractional CO2 work?
The principle of fractional laser is to treat a proportion of the skin surface area in columns of laser light. The CO2 laser passes infared light into either the superficial epidermis and or the deep dermis of the skin. This is done in the microscopic cylindrical areas of thermal damage that stimulate the body’s own wound healing response.
The resultant is new collagen production, together with replacement of the damaged skin surface, with new epidermal skin creates a surface which is smoother, fresher and clearer.
What areas can be treated?
The most common area that is treated is the face, but other areas such as neck, decolletage, arms and hands can also be treated.
What does the treatment involve?
You may be offered a sedative prior to the treatment. It is important to have a driver to take you home in these circumstances.
The kin is first cleansed and a local anaesthetic cram is applied to the area being treated. You are asked to wait within the centre while this is absorbed – approximately 90 minutes. In certain circumstances, injected anaesthetic will be used in addition to creams.
During the treatment, the laser hand piece will be passed systematically over the area being treated. The firing of the laser will feel like buzzing or tiny pin pricks. Depending on your response to the numbing, you may experience some pain.
Immediatly after treatment you will experience a burning sensation not dissimilar to that of sun burn. This reduce rapidly after a period for 1 to 4 hours. Swelling is present after treatment and is commonly marked, especially around the eyes.
A process known as ‘bronzing’ occur whereby the kin colour darkens and becomes flaky, with tiny plugs of damaged skin being ejected from the treatment zone. This process lasts from 3- 7 days for the face and 10 to 14 days for other areas. In areas treated more deeply, there will be scabs and crusting.
